How We Handle Your Electronics
Every device that comes through AK Recycling follows a rigorous, documented process.
Intake & Inventory
All items are inventoried and logged upon receipt. Serial numbers are recorded for data-bearing devices, creating a complete chain of custody from the moment items arrive at our facility.
Data Destruction
All data-bearing devices undergo certified data destruction before any further processing. This ensures your sensitive information is completely and verifiably eliminated regardless of what happens next to the hardware.
Testing & Triage
Equipment is assessed for potential reuse. Working components may be refurbished and directed to donation programs, extending the useful life of electronics and reducing the need for new production.
Responsible Processing
Non-reusable equipment is disassembled and sorted into material streams. Hazardous components like CRT glass, batteries, and fluorescent lamps are sent to specialized processors. Metals, plastics, and circuit boards are sent to certified smelters and processors.
Documentation & Reporting
Upon completion, we provide a Certificate of Recycling documenting all items processed. For data destruction, you receive a separate Certificate of Data Destruction with detailed records of every device destroyed.
Frequently Asked Questions
AK Recycling offers a comprehensive suite of electronics recycling and e-waste management services designed to serve both individual consumers and large organizations. Our core service is responsible electronics recycling—accepting, processing, and safely recovering materials from all types of electronic devices including computers, laptops, monitors, televisions, servers, networking equipment, phones, and much more.
Beyond basic recycling, we offer certified data destruction services for businesses and organizations that need to ensure sensitive information is completely eliminated from devices before disposal. Our data destruction methods include DOD-standard software wiping, degaussing, and physical shredding, with written certificates provided for every job.
For businesses with significant quantities of electronics, we offer professional on-site pickup services throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Our team comes to your location, safely packs and loads the equipment, and provides full documentation of everything collected. We also offer IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) services for organizations undergoing technology refreshes or data center decommissioning.
Community and corporate recycling events are another important part of our service offering. We can organize and manage recycling drives for businesses, municipalities, and community organizations, making responsible electronics disposal accessible to entire communities.
Yes, AK Recycling specializes in business-to-business (B2B) electronics recycling and e-waste management services. We understand that businesses face unique challenges when managing end-of-life electronics—compliance requirements, data security concerns, documentation needs, and the logistics of handling large volumes of equipment efficiently.
Our business services are designed to address all of these challenges comprehensively. We provide scheduled pickups at your facility, complete chain-of-custody documentation, serialized tracking of individual assets, and detailed reports suitable for internal compliance and external audits. For organizations operating in regulated industries such as healthcare, finance, or government, we provide the specific documentation required to demonstrate regulatory compliance.
We work with businesses of all sizes, from small startups with a handful of old computers to large enterprises retiring entire data centers. Our ITAD (IT Asset Disposition) programs can handle complex projects that involve multiple locations, tight timelines, and specific security requirements. We offer flexible service models including one-time projects and ongoing recycling partnerships.
Our competitive pricing ensures that responsible recycling is cost-effective for businesses. In many cases, the value recovered from components and materials can offset or eliminate recycling costs. Contact us for a free quote tailored to your organization's specific needs.
Our data security service is a multi-layered process designed to ensure complete and verifiable elimination of sensitive data from all electronic devices. The process begins with intake, where every data-bearing device is inventoried and tagged with a unique identifier that tracks it through the entire destruction process.
We employ several data destruction methods depending on the device type and your security requirements. For functional hard drives and storage devices, we use NIST 800-88 and DoD 5220.22-M compliant software wiping that overwrites data multiple times. For non-functional drives or those requiring the highest security level, we use physical degaussing followed by shredding that reduces the drive to pieces no larger than 2mm.
After destruction, you receive a Certificate of Data Destruction for every device processed. This certificate includes the make, model, serial number, and destruction method used for each device. This documentation is essential for compliance with HIPAA, GDPR, SOX, FACTA, and other privacy regulations.
For organizations requiring the highest level of assurance, we offer witnessed destruction services where your representative can observe the destruction process at our facility. We can also arrange on-site destruction for classified or highly sensitive equipment that cannot leave your premises. Contact us to discuss your specific data security requirements.
AK Recycling's pickup service covers the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, including all of Los Angeles County and many surrounding areas. Our primary service area includes downtown Los Angeles, East Los Angeles, South Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley, the Westside, Long Beach, Pasadena, and numerous surrounding communities.
For larger commercial pickup projects, we can extend our service area throughout Southern California. The logistics team will work with you to design the most efficient pickup plan for your needs, whether you have one location or multiple facilities that need service simultaneously.
Pickup pricing depends on several factors including the volume and types of equipment, your location within our service area, the level of documentation required, and whether data destruction services are needed. We offer free pickups for businesses with sufficient volumes of recyclable electronics—in many cases, the value of recovered materials covers the cost of service.
To get an accurate quote for your specific situation, contact us at 323.581.5700 or email rich@ak-recycling.com with details about the equipment you need recycled. We typically can provide a preliminary quote within 24 hours and schedule service within one to two weeks.
AK Recycling is proud to hold the e-Steward certification, which is widely recognized as the highest standard in responsible electronics recycling. The e-Steward program, administered by the Basel Action Network, certifies recyclers who meet strict requirements for environmental responsibility, worker health and safety, data security, and supply chain accountability.
As an e-Steward certified facility, we are independently audited to ensure we comply with all certification requirements. This means we do not export hazardous e-waste to developing countries, we do not landfill or incinerate electronics in ways that harm the environment, and we maintain strict controls over every step of the recycling process.
We also operate in compliance with California's Electronic Waste Recycling Act (SB 20/SB 50), which established California's e-waste recycling fee program. Our facility meets all California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) requirements for handling electronic waste and hazardous materials.
Additionally, we maintain compliance with OSHA standards for worker safety, DOT regulations for transport of hazardous materials, and EPA regulations for processing and disposal of electronic waste. Copies of our certifications are available upon request, and we are happy to provide compliance documentation for your records.
Depending on the condition and nature of your electronics, you may be eligible for a charitable tax deduction when donating working equipment through AK Recycling's donation programs. We work with partner organizations that refurbish and redistribute working electronics to nonprofits, schools, and individuals in need in the Los Angeles community.
For equipment that is still functional—computers, laptops, and monitors in working condition—we can direct these items to our refurbishment partners rather than the recycling stream. You would receive documentation of your donation that you can use for tax purposes, though we recommend consulting with your tax advisor to determine the specific deductible value.
For equipment that is no longer functional and is being recycled rather than donated, the situation is different. The recycling process returns materials to the commodity stream, and you would not receive a tax deduction for recycled materials in the same way you might for a charitable donation of functional equipment.
If you believe you have equipment that might qualify for donation rather than recycling, please contact us before dropping it off or scheduling a pickup. Our team can assess the equipment and help you understand the best option—whether that's donation, refurbishment, or recycling—and what documentation we can provide to support your tax records.
